Approach to Counseling
About:
Cox Religious Counseling is not about giving advice or telling clients how to live their lives or finding fault, judging or condemning. It is about empowering, enlightening and offering resources, principles and knowledge to help clients manage and solve their own problems.
Once you become my client, you can expect your needs and goals to become my sole focus.
HERE IS MY APPROACH:
01
Listen and Understanding – Before offering you any tools or principles to reflect upon, I listen actively to learn about your problems and ask questions to better understand your past experiences, familial relationships and personality. Furthermore, I create an environment where you can truly lay your burdens down and open up freely about your concerns and fears. Feeling heard and validated is a critical first step to processing your hurts and moving past the behaviors that keep you down.
02
Assessment – After the listening phase, I offer you an assessment not only of your problems, but also of the factors that helped create the current situation; and this assessment is free-of-charge.
Goal-Setting – After the assessment phase, you will have an opportunity to set your goals for improvement that will drive the rest of our work together.
03
Creation of Action Plan – Using your goals as the standard, I create a concrete 6-week action plan to help you achieve them.
04
05
Sessions – Finally, we meet once-a-week to work through problems by focusing on the established goals, addressing problems as they arise, or modifying the action plan based on new information or a shift in your goals.
I believe that God is an integral part of the healing process in the counseling experience so reading scripture from the Bible and prayer are employed. I also explore the spiritual life of each client to help them grow deeper in their relationship with Christ, and to better understand how scripture and faith can change and improve lives. Those who do not have a religious foundation but desire religious counseling are welcome. Professionalism, Compassion, and Confidentiality are my core valves.
